You might have flicked over this definition of septicaemia with out realizing that is one of those really important things to remember. So here it is again:
SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome)
For adults: a clinical response arising from a nonspecific insult, including ≥2 of the following: Temperature (>30°C or <36°c),>90 bpm), respiration rate (>20 per min or raised PCO2) or WCC (>12,000/mm3 or <4000/mm3).
Sepsis
SIRS with presumed or confirmed infectious process.
Severe sepsis
Sepsis with ≥1 sign of organ dysfunction, hypoperfusion or hypotension. Examples include septic shock or respiratory failure.
