Diabetes Type II - Drugs

Metformin

Drug of choice
Decreases gluconeogenesis
Increases peripheral utilisation of glucose
Only affective if Beta-cell capacity remains.
Common GI side-affects
Can be used for treatment of PCOS
Contra-indicated with renal failure - leads to lactic acidosis

Sulponylureas

Increase the excretion of insulin.
Only affective if Beta-cell capacity remains.
Can encourage weight gain.

Nateglinide & Repaglinide

Similar to Sulphonureas

Acarbose

Inhibits absorption of starch and sucrose
Can cause flatulence

Thiazolidinediones

Relatively new
Increase peripheral insulin sensitivity
Can cause weight gain
